What is the name of your state? New York

I am 18 years old. I was arrested in Hamburg ,NY on 3/15/08 for shoplifting flowers from a grocery store. I was with 3 friends. I was carrying the flowers. One of my friends ripped the price tag off of the flowers and threw it away as we were leaving. The store manager stopped us at the entrance to the store and took me only back into the store with the flowers. He asked me the price of the flowers, which I told him was $25. He seemed to think they cost was more like $50, and thought I was purposely trying to lower their value. That arraingement from the coooler was already made up and came with the base included for $25 total, while other arraingements they have you buy the base seperately. That is why the manager thought I was lying about the price. A village police officer was called in by the manager. He put hand cuffs on me and drove me to the police station. I was given an appearence ticket for April to appear at the Hamburg village court . The charge is petit larceny. None of my friends were charged. My mother came and took me home. This is my first offence. It was a stupid , peer pressure type act on my part, that I am so sorry for and will not commit again.
Should I call a lawyer now to hire and get advice from and possibly bring to my appearence?
Should I plead a certain way? I want to pay for what I did , but I dont want this one dumb act to screw up my record for life.
Are there any shoplifting laws in New York you can enlighten me on?
Thank You

The answer to the question "should I get a lawyer?" is almost always yes.

The answer to "how do I plead" is "not guilty" unless your lawyer tells you otherwise.
