I plead guilty to shoplifting an item worth about $7 in a grocery store. This happened when I was 20 years old. I'm now 28 and just recently got offered a great new job where they are doing a criminal record check. Will this show up? If so, can it prevent me from getting this job?

Depends what kind of background check they are preforming on you. High security clearance, you are sunk...just a general one, hard to say, but most go back 7-10 years....Tell you what, why don't you run a quick one at like knowx or rapsheets.com see what you find...while not the most reliable method, it can be a general idea (like if it showing up there, you know they are going to find it) It never leaves your record. But listen, if you've been good this amount of time, why don't you look into your state statues regarding getting it expunged ? If they decide to hire you regardless would be a matter of that companies policy. What the heck did you need so badly for 7.00? Sorry, I just have to wonder. My husbands ex has a list of shoplifting charges, the next one is a felony.:)

Most importantly, don't lie to the potential employer. A lot of times they don't care about misdemeanors, only felonies. So if asked if you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor, tell the truth. Because if you lie and it comes up on their background check, then you're sunk. Being upfront when asked scores points.
