Shoud get a Permit for old/existing Fence?

What is the name of your state?

There is a 6-ft fence in our backyard constructed in early '80.
We recently found we should have gotten a permit for that. However, this 6-ft. fence with about 55 ft. in the backyard was constructed a long time ago when Permit and such is very lenient. Practically, back then, '80 most of our neighbors did NOT get a permit for a 6-ft fence in their backyard.

However, County- Rules and Regulation set for Home-owers getting strict, we're considering to get a permit for our old 6-ft. fence. On the otherhand, due to its age, we also planning to get new and fancy fence for its replacement within a couple of years.

Wonder whether we should get a permit for our old 6-ft. fence in our backyard right now, ... or should we wait a permit for old fence until its replacement, fancy fence for old 6-fence?

Thanks for any imputs on this regard.

What state do you live in? There is a purpose for this information and should not be skipped.

Why is this suddenly after 20 or so years and issue for you?

I'd say it pretty much comes down to your own feelings about the situation.
