What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? UT and CA

I moved to UT from CA midyear in 2011. I only filed my taxes in CA for that full year. UT has now sent me an audit for the 2011 year since I should have filed in both states originally. I am going through the amended return and I see a section that gives me credit for taxes paid to another state. Since I paid full year taxes to CA can this credit cancel out the taxes I would have been required to pay to UT? I want to file this accurately but also don't want to pay taxes twice since I already paid CA and can't get that back 5 years later.

Thanks for any help.

Why are you doing an amended return?

Utah provides line by line instructions. Read them:

http://incometax.utah.gov/instructions/line-by-line

If that doesn't help I suggest you have a Utah tax pro handle this for you.

Well I guess it wouldn't be an amended return. It would be an initial return since I didn't previously.

Good, then find the instructions for part year returns. Zig had the right idea but it needs to be the ones for part year returns, and fill out the appropriate forms. Otherwise, as suggested by Zig, find a tax professional to help you. You do not need one in Utah. Any experienced tax professional can handle tax returns for any state.
