What is the name of your state? New York

My school requires that i pay $125 in order to graduate...this money goes to writing the names of 5 top students in the class on the wall in gold paint, the graducation ceremony, cap and gown, and diploma

my name isn't going on the wall and i'm not going to the ceremony, but in order to recieve my diploma i need to bring in the cap and gown on the last day of school.

is it legal for them to make a student pay for their diploma? isn't a diploma earned? if they make you pay, isn't that basically violating your right to a free education..i mean the whole purpose of going to school is to graduate, but if yo ucan't graduate without paying how is that free?

My response:

And, when you discussed this matter with your Principal, what was the response?

My response:

Okay. And, when you contacted the Board of Education, what was their response?

i left a message to the district superintendent but i haven't recieved one yet

My response:

Then, you keep calling and if you don't get a response, you ask to speak to that person's supervisor. If that person doesn't respond to you, then you ask to speak to the next higher person. In other words, keep going up the ladder, going to the top if necessary, until you get a response - - TODAY.

thanks for the advice :), i'm gonna try to. Sadly, however, The New York State Department of Education doesn't care very much about students or their rights

You'll get one anyway. Proper communication is the Hallmark of a civilized society.

My response:

I hope you wrote down names. Next stop, the Mayor's office. Then, if that doesn't work, your State Senator's office - - I think the name is Clinton, or something like that.

Good luck, kiddo!

Thanks for the luck, i certainly need it. Especially with a Mayor like Bloomberg and senators like Schumer and Clinton. One is too busy taking the train to work to care about students or their rights, and the other trying to be the first woman on a $1 ruler.
