Showing Erotic Art To A Minor

My 13 yr old daughter recently related to me that a non related adult female (friend of Dad's and known erotic artist in town) showed her several of her paintings that were nude women. This happened at her father's house. Apparently this young woman (in her 20s) had a camera and showed her snapshots of them when they were sitting alone together. My daughter came to me after the fact and was quite uncomfortable seeing these nude paintings. I found some of this artist's pictures on line at a gallery and they are quite unsuitable for minors. Her father was not around when this woman took it upon herself to show these erotic paintings to my daughter.

What are the Ohio laws about showing this type of material to minors and what can I do about it? I pretty much ready to call the police.

Have you told your daughter to stay away from this person and told this person to stay away from your daughter? Follow through for a minute the possible consequences of reporting this person to the police. Do you really want to involve your family in that? You should at least try to nip it in the bud. I guarantee you that a curious 13 year old has already seen FAR more explicit images on the internet.

Why was your daughter uncomfortable seeing pictures of PAINTINGS of naked women? What about the paintings made her uncomfortable? Or is she uncomfortable because she doesn't like the person? Have you talked to dad and the woman about this? Are these pictures at a public gallery in which children can go?

The paintings are not in a public gallery but an erotic art gallery with a warning posted for over 18 only. (I read up on it online and saw what seems like some of the same paintings there). I have spoken with my daughter already. I do plan to communicate with her father in this regard but I was alarmed at an adult showing inappropriate sexual material to a child. The thought of the police crossed my mind just because of the nature of the paintings. These paintings really would not be posted in a museum. Maybe this woman is some kind of pervert. I do understand there is a subculture of independent artists who hold fast to their rights about controversial paintings and usually those are reserved for adult viewing only. I was initially alarmed that she crossed a line but I will let a rational approach prevail first and then see what happens .

I find it telling that the adult friend chose to wait until the two of them were alone before showing the paintings to your daughter. As a purveyor of adult erotic material she should know the legal issues regarding showing such material to a minor and she should be reminded strongly of that.

Your daughter should be commended for talking to you about this. I would also make it clear to her that if this "friend" ever asks her to keep future conversations secret from you, you need to know about it right away.

If a friend wants you to keep a secret from your parents is it because your friend is doing something they know is wrong.

Handle this situation with your ex husband & dont bring the cops into this. You may be opening up a big can of worms. Why is it that everytime something happens people want to run to the cops ? Handle this within the family. Use common sense.

I agree with this after reading her responses to my question. I was asking the questions I did because some people would consider "David" to be an erotic piece of art or even pornography.

Handle it within the family. Your daughter was shown a nude painting of a woman by a woman. This is not something I would get worked up over.

I do commend my daughter because it was not an easy thing to do for her and thank you for recognizing her courage. She felt relieved having told someone.

Not all nude pictures are erotic. Sounds like these were crossing the line.
