Our employer has given us 12 days per year to use as sick time, however, if we use more than 7 per year we will be reprimanded - first offense is verbal, second is written, third can be separation from company. Our union had to sign a contract accepting this because we had our backs against the wall. Has anyone heard of being given benefits and then being reprimanded for using them?

No, I have not heard of this situation before. Sounds like an interesting way of doing business from the employer's point of view. Since you are unionized though, you will have to follow carefully your grievance procedures and policy to get things changed.
