Can a 17 year old sign a confession with out his parent/guardian or attorney present?

My nephew was arrested, and was told that they knew he was guilty so he should just confess and it would make things easier on him. He is only 17. His guardian was not there at the time**************...

"Signing" it is not required. It only enhances the claim it was true and voluntary. It does not usually have a specific statutory meaning.
