What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Maryland

I am the receptionist for my company I started working for them 5 months ago. About 1 month ago I was transferred to a new supervisor who has only been with the company for 3-4 months. He had a disagreement with someone who I am very close friends with who he is not the immediate supervisor of. Ever since then he has begun to single me out.

On Fridays we have casual day. Everyone is allowed to wear jeans and knit tops. It was a normal Friday and he called me into his office proceeded to tell me that I am no longer allowed to wear jeans on Friday and that everyone else was still allowed to. This included the person who relieves me for my lunch. He also told me that I had two choices I can either go home and change or I can go home and use a personal day for the time. I am not worried about not being able to wear jeans really what bothered me is that any other job you would be notified before hand if they are changing the dress policy or they will let you work through the day and ask that you correct your attire in the future.

A week has gone by almost two since then and yesterday he brought me into his office. He gave me a new description of my job and new requirements for it. The work only has a few changes which I am open to trying. However, the physical requirements has changed to lifting a minimum of 20 lbs. That would not be a problem except I am disabled and have a maximum lift of 20 lbs. It had been discussed not only during both my interviews but also many times with him and human resources. The stipulation of me coming on board was that I would not have to lift anything over 20 lbs. He told me I needed to take my doctor my new job function list and have him write a letter addressing each item and if there is any problems with me doing it physically. I have heard of requesting a general restriction documentation however to have the doctor write a letter addressing every part of my job function is unheard of. He also informed me that these were my job functions as of now and once I bring in the letter then he would revamp it but until then I am responsible for carrying out everything on the list no exceptions.

The main problem that I am having is how he talks to me. Even when asking me to do something as simple as taping a bunch of papers together his speech is very degrading. He is not sensitive to my physical limitations and his expectations are not within the company’s job parameters itself let alone my physical abilities.

Please am I just being over sensitive or am I in fact being singled out?

Excluding you from Friday's casual dress policy, whether because you are the receptionist or because you are friends with someone your boss doesn't like is not illegal. FYI, it is not at all uncommon for the Receptionist not to be allowed to come to work in jeans, even if everyone else can.

What are you being required to lift that will exceed 20 lbs? I've never known a receptionst to have any job duties that include manual labor. Typically it's answering the phone, greeting visitors, and doing some clerical work.

I am responsible for the mail room supplies and pick-up & delivery of packages there have been a few times that we have had several packages that were 30, or 40 lbs. I usually have one of the guys assist me but now my supervisor doesn't want me to bother them with it.

What is your supervisor's malfunction because there is nothing wrong with getting help if you have legitimate physical limitations. If I were your supervisor's boss I'd fire him for lack of common sense.
