What is the name of your state?california
My wife worked as the manager of a martial arts studio. She was also the senior instructor at this location. She was let go by the owner and since this is a state that allows termination for no cause, no big deal. The problems stems from the fact that after the termination, the owner of the studio called a number of students into the office and told them that my wife had been let go because she was in a lot of legal trouble, that this was my wife's "third strike", that she had be stealing from the studio and also had been calling all of the students to get them to join a martial arts studio she was starting. A personal friend was one of the students who were called into the office and advised of this. Is this not slander and if so what can or should my wife do about this?

A: It is slander if it is untrue; it is not slander if it is true. If your wife feels damaged by this, she should hire a personal injury lawyer.

The burden of proof will be on her to show what damages she has, although the fact that he's said she was in legal trouble MAY be sufficient. Talk to a local attorney.
