What is the name of your state? New York

I wrote a letter to my husbands ex-wife expressing my opinion of her and of her mothering skills. The letter was a result of an ongoing issue between my huband and his ex-wife but that really doesn't come into play here so I won't elaborate. I made it perfectly clear in the letter that what I was saying was MY opinion and mine alone. No one read the letter I wrote. Not my husband, not even my Mother. Just me. I sent it addressed to her, certified mail, signature required to her place of business so that it would go to her and not her husband or any of the kids and it would be signed by her. I also mailed a copy to myself the same day so that I would have a postmarked, sealed copy, just in case.

She took this letter and let her husband, her parents, her brother and his wife, her babysitter and her son's teacher read it.

Now she is saying she is going to sue me for libel or slander or defamation of character, whatever. I maintain that since I mailed it to her and did not publish or share it with anyone that she has no case. She is stating that other people saw it and she does have a case. But she is the one that shared it with those people not me. Also, everything that I said in the letter is my opinion only. I did not threaten or harrass in any way.

My question is, does she have any grounds for a lawsuit for libel, slander or defamation? My marriage is suffering terribly from what she has been doing to both my husband and me and my son is also suffering not only emotionally but also financially and those are the main reasons I wrote this letter to begin with.

I appreciate anyone's insight or advice. I really have nowhere else to turn. She has bled us dry financially and we can't afford a lawyer at the moment.

Thank you very much.

Tell her two things:

A. Bite rocks

and

2. You have no case.

That's pretty funny. Thanks for your input. I was not having a good day. You made me laugh :) I kind of suspected she didn't have a case but really needed to find out for sure. Thanks again.
