What is the name of your state?OH

I am a police officer in ohio. as part of the penalties for getting a DUI, persons must go to a countermeasures program. A friend of mine went to the class and the instructor, a County Deputy, brought my name up twice. According to my friend, the instructor said that I picked on females while doing my job. I still have to work in this town and I don't want people to think that I am being bias based on sex. Since he is discrediting me in my profession to the people that I may have contact with, I feel that the instructor is making my job harder and that females may feel that they have grounds to get out of any citation that I may give them.

Is this slander? What are my options?

Has your job been harder since you heard what this person allegedly said about you? How do you know the instructor was not joking? How well does the instructor know you? Did you even speak with the instructor about what you were told he said about you?

slander?

Ohio

Has my job been made harder? I haven't worked since I found out. but i know that I am going to feel self conscience about how I treat people. I don't think that the instructor was joking. The friend that told me all this is a fellow officer. He said that most of the class was a bitch session about the police department, the judge, and me. As I said, I still have to police the students that were in the class and their friends. I am going to be waiting for the day that I run into one of them and they say hey, I heard about you from an instructor. He said you pick on females, so quit picking on me.

I don't know this guy very well. I may have met him once or twice. I wouldn't be able to pick him out of a crowd unless someone told me who he was.

what do you think?

think about what? So far all you have is a second hand story. You haven't gone to work. you haven't had anyone complain to you. you haven't talked to the instructor to get his version of what was said.

Do you pick on women? How much truth is in what you were told he said?

First, if you perform your duties as required by your policy manual and state laws you have nothing to worry about. If....IF...this fellow officer is actually badmouthing you in the classes you need to take it to his/her supervisor. You have a chain of command for dealing with situations like this.

Question: If this little scrap is causing you grief, what are you going to do when a real complaint is filed? Police officers get sued or have false charges filed all the time. You're gonna need a lot tougher skin and better knowledge of your own policies than what you are showing to survive as a cop.
