I worked for a medical transcription service as an independent contractor. The company I worked for got behind in paying me and now owes me over $1300.00.

They said the reason they have not paid me is because the doctors using the service had not paid them. The doctors have paid and can provide proof (cancelled checks) that they did.

How do I go about getting my money? This service was in Troy, Missouri. The business owner has left town and set up shop in Alabama.

Any advice is appreciated.

You were doing just fine....... until you threw in the part about the 'owner' moving out of state.

Choices:
1) Sue the owner in your state and, if he can be served in AL, get a default judgment (or he could file a motion to dismiss due to jurisdictional issues). And if you get a judgment, you would have to domesticate it into Alabama to try to get at the debtors assets, or
2) Sue the owner in Alabama so that you wouldn't have face the cost and risk of domestication, or
3) Forget about it and chalk it up as another 'life lesson learned'.

And, no, the doctors have no obligation to pay you.... since they are not a part of your 'work' agreement.
