It is very common for a court to issue a judgment (or even a FIFA) if the Defendant doesn't show at trial. It is a Default judgment.

Or a court could issue a judgment in favor of the Defendant if he doesn't show or fails to prosecute the case in a timely manner.

It is done all the time and doesn't necessarily indicate that anyone has pulled 'a fast one'.
