I am from Michigan.

I am getting married October 31, 2004. I want to know how the social host law applies to me. I think the MADD website says it is "case law limited", but I'm not sure what that means.

Basically, all I want to know is this... if we serve alcohol at our wedding reception, can we in any way, shape, or form, be held responsible if a guest leaves intoxicated and injures/kills a third party or damages property, or themselves?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Frogsey: I googled it and found the same you did under Social Host laws for MI -- MADD "case law limited", so I went to another site for MI and found this URL (might help some).

I'm not an attorney, but it's my understanding that one serving alcohol in their home can be liable.

Congratulations on getting married. When I was married 22 years ago, we apparently weren't worried because there was gobs of alcohol! Today, though, uh uh.

Then PLAN on calling a cab or two or three and paying for it, so they get home safe, then let them worry about picking their car up the next day.
