What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Arizona
Hi, I recently went to get Social Security to get my name changed my card. I got married in December. I was previously married an abusive man, left , divorced , changed my name , and worked hard to build a life for my son and myself. My new husband is from my home town I dated before I went to college. I got my divorce in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The name change paper says Celestia Spears Hunter. Spears is my middle name, the lady at the social security office insisted it was my last name. There is no hyphen and there is a space. They kept part of my old name on my card Celestia Laura Spears Hunter. I have been trying to get that fixed for years. The name change papers states Celestia Spears Hunter. My Dl says Celestia S. Hunter so does my new marriage license. She called New Mexico and the Manager at the court house told her it was a middle name. I told her that Social Security put my old name Laura , which isn't part of my name on the new card. She said I can't prove that. I have the card to prove they made a mistake. I just want it changed to Celestia S. Messenger. My marriage name. So I can get my drivers license changes and get a passport to go on a honeymoon, She said that my marriage was invalid because the name on it is wrong, my id is invalid from Texas because Spears isn;t spelled out, I told her Texas doesn't usually spell out the middle name. She said Spears was my last name and Albuquerque has to give documentation stating spears is my middle name. They don't do that, I called Albuqueque and them manager said she told he the Social Security lady , that Spears isn;t hyphenated , and there is a space making it my middle name. I got frustrated and asked for a superviser, she said no, and she would have me arrested, I didn't swear at her, yell , or demean her. I have found that a lot of the govermental offices in Arizona are hostal if your not born in the state. I am at my wits, I left in tears I just want to take my last name to be my new husband, I was married by a judge, who looked over the marriage license And was told it was vaild because Arizona issued it. I shouldn't have to get a new name change via the court or hire a lawyer, I am just be able change name on the card. The manager in Albuquerque agreed with me. Does anyone have any ideas.
