What is the name of your state? the debt was in Louisiana

This may be a stupid question but I'm new to all this. Does the statute of limitations mean that they have to try to collect before this time limit runs out? If they have not contacted me within this time, does that mean that they can no longer try to collect?

Not quite. They can try to COLLECT until hell freezes over, but once the statute of limitations runs out, they lose the ability to enforce collection of the debt thru the courts. In other words, they can TRY to sue you on an expired debt, but if the SOL has run out, you can get the case thrown out of court.
