I sold my old car to a friend, and he lost the title before he went to the DMV to transfer and register. All I have to prove the sale is a Bill of Sale.

Do i need to pay for a replacement title (since it is still in my name)?

The registration under my name ended in November, he is just driving with an outdated sticker now.

Should I have printed and mailed a release of liability form (i just found out about this)?

The car is registered in Illinois.

Thank you for any information or advice, this has been stressing me out!

Your buyer should pay any costs incurred for lost paperwork. You definitely need to report the sale.

The key here was friend. Ask him for the $25 and go get another title to transfer to him. This is not rocket science. If he does seriously not have the money, you could end up spending thousands in an effort to save $25.

The word in that situation is charity. For example I used my auto club card to have a total stranger pulled out of a ditch today. I accepted nothing in return but her promise to make mention in her prayers tonight. She was stuck there for 3 hours and missing work, but could not afford the cost of a 5 minute winching.

Although my post is to bump a (deleted? reported?) thread off the main board, I really like OHRoadwarrior's advice and it is worth repeating.

There is not (nor should there be) a legal solution to every problem.
