Sold Used Car Question

I just sold a 98 honda civic last tuesday to a buyer. I did not get a smog inspection because the catalytic converter needs replacing, which is the reason why I was selling the car "as-is". The buyer was aware of the issue along with a few other minor issues. I stated it in my ad, I stated it in person, and I also typed up a little document stating this that I signed, he signed, and a witness signed. He has not threatened to ask for his money back but he has told me that the repair quotes he has gotten was alot more than he has expected. I just wanted to know if I'm covered incase he threatens to ask for his money back and I refuse??

Once you sell an as-is car, you are no longer responsible for it unless you made some kind of specific warranties about it at the time of the sale.

That is not entirely true. In California, the SELLER is required to provide a recent SMOG certificate when the vehicle is sold.
That doesn't mean you have to give the money back, but you may be responsible for obtaining a valid SMOG cert.

THE SELLER is obligated to provide one. The car you sell must pass SMOG. He might of said he'd take care of it with the assumption that it would pass. You are responsible to make sure it passes.

That does not matter.

The purpose of the law is coerce compliance and or drive polluting vehicles off the road.

IE if the cost of repair exceeded the value, then scrap it.

Needs smog UNLESS it'll be used as off road - race only... Only time it wouldn't is if it was sold w/ in like, 3 years of year of car... You do not have to buy it back, but, you must fix the smog...
