What is the name of your state? GA
recently received a letter from a company asking that I send a check to them for $1264.93 to reimburse them for paying my 2005 property taxes on my home. I don't have any accounts with this company. My mortgage history does show my mortgage company paid my 2005 property tax and then received that payment back from the tax commissioner's office, indicating the taxes were already paid. Am I legally bound to repay the company requesting reimbursement?

I am definitely not paying them myself. They will have to go through the tax office or my mortgage company, both of which I firmly believe will say shove off.

Let me put it another way, if you are sued, you will lose. It would be in your best interest to be proactive. Waiting on the other parties is going to cost you a lot more in the long run. If the company that paid the taxes in error does get a refund from the county for the mispaid taxes, you and no one else will be liable for the taxes plus any penalties and interest. If the company chooses to sue you, you will lose and be liable for court and attorney fees. I would suggest a change in attitude and getting to work to get this straightened out asap.

Yes, a change in attitude is definitely needed!

What ever happened to ethics?

Here’s another scenario to consider – if you filed a Schedule A on your 2005 income tax, and you declared these property taxes as being paid by you, you are in a “heap of trouble”.
