What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Kentucky

My step son just texted me, he got a speeding ticket last night. Not his first. He got one about 6 months ago and did the online traffic school for it. This one won't be so easy. He's 19, he was ticketed for going 94 in a 45. Yes you read that right. I'm not even going to touch on the parenting side here, as far as I'm concerned he should be pedaling a bike for the next year. The court date is set for next month. Any suggestions on what to expect? I saw that for anything over 25 over the speed limit it's hearing-possible suspension.

Considering it's his second in such a short time, and considering his age, I would definitely expect a suspension or revocation of his license.

That is pretty much what I am thinking. Does he need a lawyer for this? There is little chance of fighting anything on it. On the citation it says that he told the officer he thought he was going 85, still way over. I don't know what it is about teenage boys and speed and lack of common sense. Can we make it illegal for anyone under the age of 25 to own a sports car?

This is really up to your ADULT Stepson to deal with. As he should. Action = Consequence = Loss of License = Learning experience. ;)

Oh he's going to be dealing with it. I will help him/support him, but I'm not paying for it. If I do, it will be with a loan against his car.

I won't bail my kids (adult or juvenile) out of situations, but I will help them navigate through their stupidity when needed.

1st time I would...not the 2nd time. MHO.

I don't know if I went wrong in how I raised my son (not step-son, came into his life when he was 16), but neither of these boys act like responsible adults. No idea how to manage money, don't save, etc. My son saw me go through hard times as a single mom, so you would think he would get it. Step-son on the other hand, mom is a horrible example of how to handle finances so he has somewhat of an excuse, but not really.

Let them, son and stepson, deal with their legal matters. TIMHO. :)

Consider this, also ... do YOU pay his insurance? Hopefully he is already paying his own freight ... if not, you will be paying for it for up to 36 months (depending on how it works with your company and in your state).

He pays his own insurance, I don't fund stupidity. lol

He may not be able to afford his own insurance after this episode.
I did a little more reading today. They can suspend his license up to 90 days for the speeding violation.

Out of curiosity, can the judge add more charges on? Like reckless driving? Just curious. I'll go to court with him just so he's not going by himself, but I'll happily help the judge throw the book at him. He needs to learn one way or another.

It's not the judges business to add charges. That would be a decision made by a prosecutor.

I don't know how the Kentucky courts operate in regards to traffic cases.
