undefinedWhat is the name of your state? California

My daughter is on a colorguard team at her school and loves it. They have competitions in the spring. She also has been studying to be confirmed for over 2 years and has a retreat in the spring. In short, if she goes to the retreat which is mandatory, she will miss one of the competitions. The school says they will have to cut her off the team if she misses the competition. How can I stop this! The school won't budge!

Unfortunately, the school is probably within their rights. When a student signs up for an extra curricular activity, it is with the knowledge that there will be days that attendance is mandatory. Failing to attend one of those events CAN be grounds for dismissal from the activity or team.

For instance, if I signed up for football knowing that every Friday was a game and that I would have a special church fuinction one Friday each month, I would expect to either be dropped from the team or have to cancel the church event.

Though I am curious, what church requires a mandatory "retreat" prior to Confirmation? And have you thought about the difficult - yet probably doable' - possibility of either driving her from the retreat to the competition then back again? Or some other such accomodation? I can't imagine that missing part of one day of the retreat would result in her not getting confirmed.

How can you stop this? Tell daugher to make a choice.

The school is well within their legal rights to set conditions for participation.

Ever hear of the separation of church and state?
