What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NV Can someone please explain to me the difference between SSDI and SSI? I was under the impression that SSI could be garnished but SSDI could not. Any help would be great. Thank You.

What is the difference between Social Security disability and SSI disability?

Answer
The Social Security Administration is responsible for two major programs that provide benefits based on disability: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on prior work under Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Under SSI, payments are made on the basis of financial need.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is financed with Social Security taxes paid by workers, employers, and self-employed persons. To be eligible for a Social Security benefit, the worker must earn sufficient credits based on taxable work to be "insured" for Social Security purposes. Disability benefits are payable to blind or disabled workers, widow(er)s, or adults disabled since childhood, who are otherwise eligible. The amount of the monthly disability benefit is based on the Social Security earnings record of the insured worker.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program financed through general revenues. SSI disability benefits are payable to adults or children who are disabled or blind, have limited income and resources, meet the living arrangement requirements, and are otherwise eligible. The monthly payment varies up to the maximum federal benefit rate, which may be supplemented by the State or decreased by countable income and resources. See Understanding Supplemental Security Income for an explanation of SSI benefit payment rates.

SSDI can be garnished - SSI can-not be garnished.

Thank you for your prompt response. If I may ask another question....We have conflicting paperwork. Most of it says SSI on it, but I found an old document last night that had SSDI on it. Husband suffered catastrophic illness that left him disabled in 2003. How will I be able to confirm as to which he is receiving? We have it direct deposited into my account, but all it says is Social Security credit, and the amount. Please advise. Thank you.

He will need to be on the phone at least to give you permission to talk to SSA . ( after they verify ID info. ).

Call the 800 number -800-772-1213 , or try your local SS # .

If no answers there , if at all possible both of you go to your local office with the letters you have .

Additionally , the notifications each year should verify it .

You can always request income verification to be sent by SSA .

You can also just check how he gets paid. Whether he gets paid by checks or direct deposits into his bank account, all Social Security Administration benefits are paid in separate payments. So in his case there will be one for SSDI and one for SSI. Other SSA benefits are separate payments too, such as Survivors benefits and \ or Retirement benefits.
