my wife and I are starting a divorce. Because there was
real estate property involved that I owned prior to the marriage I told her she should talk to an attorney about
what her rights are as far as the amount she could get
from the sale of the property if i had to sell. the attorneys she has gone to have told her that she pretty much wouldn't get much from sale, due to the debts owed on it etc. the attorneys told her that she should get spousal support in the amount of $1200. a month and told her not to sign a quit claim deed until i agreed to it. i bring home about $3200. a month clear and my debts will be about $2900.a month(not including utilties, gasoline etc.). she makes about $1200-$1500 a month and her debts will be about $400. a month (not including rent utilties, gasoline etc.)we just both want to get out of this 9 year marriage and have agreed to property settlements but she has told me that the attorneys won't take the case unless she agrees to take spousal support.will the courts require me to pay spousal support even if it will force me to sell the house and reduce my standard of living? i could not afford to buy another house again.won't the courts honor our agreement just the way we write it up? everything else is settled between us except for the spousal support. she doesn't want any and i of course don't want to pay any. i get the impression that the attorney's are blackmailing me. also we want to use just one attorney. what are my rights.
