I am an artist. I am just getting started doing some commissions for private people, and am looking to expand into a bigger business. I would like to do free lance artwork and include work for companies. What is the first thing I need to do so I can be tax prepared. Do I need to start with a D/B/A, tax ID #, and how do I pay taxes on the work I get? I want to be prepared before I start taking on any work.

It varies form state to state. Consult the dept of licensing & revenue and sign up for the next state tax class.
