What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? South Carolina

My ex wants to subpeona my text messages from my phone company. We live in different states SC and MI. My lawyer is attempting to quash this subpeona because I text her as well, which would go against attorney/client priveledge. My question is: Are different states obligated to answer any type of subpeona or is it voluntary? I want to know this for any future reference I may need.
