My response:

It's not a law. It's contractual. Every insurance company, in their policy, has a condition concerning reporting accidents.

4 months is fine then

So as long as the insurance company policy states it's okay, one can report it as far as 4 months or longer after the event occurred? Would this apply to one's own company or the other party's company? What I'm asking is, if my policy gave 1 year time frame, but the other party's gave 2 years or something (arbitrary times), I could report it to his company as long as it's within 2 years? Sorry if the question sounds simplistic but I just need clarification. Thanks.
