What is the name of your state? Mississippi

I received a letter from a collecitons firm about a check that bounced 7 years ago. The letter said that I had recently been notified of this fact, but I knew nothing of it until this letter. The date of incident is 7 years ago. I have never ignored such a thing. I believe that I must have paid the store after they had turned it over to collections. I don't know of any other explanation as to why I am just now getting such a notice. I am convinced that I did not deliberately ignore any notices of a bad check! I would have settled it immediately when I learned of such a thing. Being 7 years ago, I don't still have records to prove it. What is the statute of limitations in Mississippi on a bad check? As I said, I was NOT notified until now that this supposed bad check was not paid. Why would they wait 7 years? If I do indeed owe the money, I certainly want to pay it. I am not irresponsible in such things. But how can I know for sure that they are not trying to collect on something that was already paid years ago? Thanks for all the help you can give me.

3 years according to the Feds.

They didn't 'wait' 7 years, IF it's at all legit it's been passed around and around to any number of junk debt buyers and collection agencies. There are several who 'specialize' in so-called bad checks and they are law-breaking scumbags.

Send them a letter asking for proof - it's called validation. You can find more info on it here: www.creditinfocenter.com.
