Does anyone know the steps one needs to take to get a State Statute changed. We were granted visitation, but the statute was silent on telphonic visits. Is it simply lobbying or is it very detailed? It would make sense that if we are to see the children twice a year, that phone visits would keep things consistent. The Judges hands were tied.

My response:

For your part, you find out who your State Senator is, and then write him / her your issue, the problem, and your ideas for a solution. If your ideas get adopted for committee hearings on the subject as a Bill, then there would be a chance your changes could become law.

You need to be talking to your respective State legislators, specifically the Senators and Representatives. Call your State government office and find out who are the Chairs of the Committees that deal in Family Law issues. Then start writing letters to them and meet with them. Depending on the politics in your State, formal lobbying may play a key role in the passage or ammendment of a statute. Sometimes it is the protests of the people at large that make a difference.
