What is the name of your state? Missouri

A Wife, two step daughters and two daughters of my own.

My wife and her kids moved out a year ago. My wife messed me over big-time financially.
"Berlin Wheeler", a collection company, said I am responsible for her kid's medical bills when they lived here.

Another place called me today and said that my wife, who does not live here, is in no way responsible for my kid's medical bills when we all lived together but rather want's my kid's biological mother's name and address...???

Which is it??? It can't be both ways where my wife is not ever responsible for any of these medical bills! I am going to pay everyone but I would like to pay what I have to pay 1st.

Thank you for any info. What is the name of your state?

This doesn't make sense....Why would a collector want your EX wife's name and address for a bill for your step children??

None of this makes sense. OP if you want an answer spell it out, obviously, there is a wife (soon to be Mrs Ex 2) and an ex wife (Mrs. Ex 1), and apparently the two daughters of your own are not your current wife's(#2) but the daughters of some other bio mom, (#1) now whose kids are the bills for and who's on first??

Sorry

I guess my mind and fingers arent connected this evening.

Soon-to-be ex-wife #2 has two kids with medical bills.

Ex #1 and I have kids, also with medical bills.

Berlin Wheeler say's I am responsible for all of them. This is fine and makes sense I guess...

But #2 is not responsible for my kid's medical bills but rather ex #1.

I guess my question in it's simplest - am I responsible for my step kid's medical bills? If so, then why isn't #2 responsible for my kids bills? If not, I'm putting those bills on the bottom of the pile...

(#2 was tossing bills, running up debt in my name... it's a mess)

I re-read it and it makes sense to me???

Even if...

They have dad's although I had the insurance.

I guess that's the point Berlin Wheeler is making. I was the source of their primary insurance.

I'll try and put them off until the bills I know are mine are paid.

Thanks

You had the insurance, I am assuming the insurance paid their portion and what remains on the bill is the difference? Who signed for responsibility of unpaid portions of the medical bills, you or mom? I would think this would have been done at the doctor's office upon setting up the original account.

I don't know

She took them but I have no idea what name was written for the account. Most likely mine. I think those notes at the doctor's say "Primary Insurers"... or something like that.

Yes, for years they were either paid, went towards the $1,200 deductable, or went unpaid because she had to prove or show the kid's real father's didn't have to pay due to some divorce or something. The couple times I did see those letters, she got mad about not being treated like part of my(mine and her) family by the insurance and refuse to pay or sign anything. I took care of those but obviously there were numerous things like that that came in...

I once had to get written permission from my wife to talk to hospital billing about my stepkids due to some new law. All I've asked lately is who it's for, when, and how much which no one seems to mind telling me.

I would guess that because they were all on your insurance, the billers are going to think you're the responsible party for all of them. That may or may not be legally true, but since you're the insurance subscriber, you're the first person they're going to call.

Unless you had insurance on her children or signed a financial responsibility form at the medical provider, you are not responsible.

Spend the money for an attorney to write both a letter giving them the name and last known address of the mother and informing them you are not responsible for someone else's children then be done with it.

Or if he signed the medical papers stating he would be responsible for them.

But OP said it WAS his insurance on her kids.

I'm not saying he's responsible, I'm just saying that's why the billers are calling him, because he's named as the subscriber on the insurance.

OP, have you tried just sending the bills to your ex and telling her to pay them?
