What is the name of your state? North Carolina

I have another question... My boyfriend wants to file before the new laws go into effect. He has a ton of medical bills from before he had health insurance. But at the beginning of '99, somone stole his SSN, and went on a Credit Card, spending spree. He's tried to clear this up to the best of his ability, but when running his credit reports a lot of the creditors are still listing him as owing money. He's tired of dealing with the whole thing, and wants to know if BK will wipe this out. Not sure if the trustee will have a problem with this. He is unable to get a lot of the account numbers, b/c on the report the last 4 digits are X'ed out. Will no account number be a problem? Also some of his creditors do not have any contact information. Just the abbreviated name, eg: AMCOL CLMBIA, with no address or way to get in touch with them. How are we supposed to determine a way to get in contact with them? An online search turned up no reults. And some of the things that the guy ran up- are just listed on his report as the collection agency, and he has no idea what company it was originated with. Will the collection agency, upon reciept of Bankruptcy notification, pass the info along to the company they are collecting for?

Sorry for so many questions. It's just one big mess.

Absolutely. In fact, ID theft drives far too many people into bankrutpcy. If its a debt that's in his name, even if its fraudulent, then its dischargable. However, I can only wonder how your BF has been dealing with the ID theft with the bureaus and creditors all this time. I know is difficult to make headway, but there ARE ways to stop it and get rid of the fraudulent accounts.

Call the credit bureaus and ASK THEM for the full account number - its that simple. They may ask for some Identifying information but THEY have the full numbers and HE can get them. Just make sure he makes it known what accounts are fraudulent and due to ID theft. He should have put a block on his reports right after his ID was stolen.

Also some of his creditors do not have any contact information. Just the abbreviated name, eg: AMCOL CLMBIA, with no address or way to get in touch with them. How are we supposed to determine a way to get in contact with them?
Again, ASK the credit bureaus for that info. The furnishers MUST report it, so they DO have it.

Then you're not looking in the right places. Go to www.creditboards.com and you'll find plenty of people who probably have had the same creditors and be familiar with the abbreviations.

No, and if the collection agency BOUGHT the debt, there is no one else to notify. Just make sure he lists them ALL. Tying them to the original debt isn't as important as making sure they get listed.
