My question is: Can a mechanic repair shop be held legally liable if your car was stolen from their premises/property?

My car was stolen about a week ago. The Shop owner claims he had nothing to do with it and just thought that it was the owner who had sent someone to pick it up. We have issued a stolen vehicle report with the police and notified the DMV. But I am wondering if he is legally responsible for what happened and if there is recourse I can take against him.

Any information would be appreciated!
