What is the name of your state? nevada

This had happened a while back, but i have only gotten full notice of this very recently.

I was living in nevada earlier this year, driving a cadillac with proper regsitration. The condition of my car's engine was getting to be very bad .in october my car had died, after driving it to a mecahnic friend of mines house to see if he could do anything to fix it. After he had said there wasnt anything he could do, he asked me if i wanted to get it towed to a scrapyard. I thought this was a good idea and said yes.

In late january, after moving back to california early that month, I recieved a notice that a towing company had been storing my car since mid dec, and that I owed them a total of 973$ (though I dont know how much more the fee has gone up since the notice was sent). this was the first notice i had received that gave any indication that my car was being held. After contacting my mechanic friend whose house my car was parked in front of, he told me that shrotly before he had it towed, police had come by and had it towed (to a private towing establishment, not city towing)

If I wasnt given any prior notice that my car was being held by this towing company, and being under the impression that the car had been collected by a junkyard, what is my liability ? I cannot afford to pay such high storage fees, and would like to know of any other options
