Work for a company in Kentucky
Stuck in Ohio

My husband is a truck driver, he was driving at night trying to make it to his first stop to bed down. He ends up having to pull into a rest area and informs his company that he is in severe pain. Thinking it wasnt necessarily anything more than really bad trapped gas, or a stomach bug, he ends up laying down. A lady from his work calls for an ambulance for him and he is taken to the ER.

He stays for a full week, recieving emergency gal bladder removal surgery and forms a blood clot on his 2nd to last day there. He did not take any pain meds since the night before, thinking he would be able to drive at least and couldnt do so if he took pain meds. Work then referred him to medical services, where a woman is supposed to break it all down for him telling him what he needs to turn in, where his truck is, etc. This lady never answers her phone or email. He tried multiple numbers, left voicemails, and couldnt get a hold of her even after someone said she was in the office. Someone else ended up informing him he is in suspended status til he gets a release form and new medical card.

On the app for work the load that was on his truck still says it is assigned to him which is doubtful, and says the truck is at our house, which it definitely isnt. They had someone drive his truck more north in Ohio and drop it off at a terminal. (2 hours away from him)

Since he was released from the hospital around 430 in the afternoon he waited around and they said there were no hotels open near him, bull because I could see plenty open, they tried ubers to take him to a bus location, none accepted, and they dont do rental cars unless they are appoved by corporate, which no one tried to do. So the hospital arranged a taxi to the bus location, which came around 8 pm and drove him to the bus stop. He waits for 5 hours at a gas station because that is where the bus comes, its not a real bus stop or terminal. The bus arrives at 230 in the morning, he rides to the next bus which drops him closer to the terminal he is supposed to get to around 8 in the morning. All this while not being able to take pain meds and no seats at the gas station so his leg is hurting from the blood clot. Also this gas station had a policy where you aren't allowed to wait around but the cashier said it was okay just because he came from the hospital and had no where else to go.

I dont care if you are male or female, to be left for hours at night in a place you dont know, with a notorious crime rate (or not) is really jacked up.

So from the last bus stop, they will only provide Uber to his truck and then Uber back to the bus terminal and a bus to get home. He cant carry his stuff from his truck onto a bus. I mean his whole life is on that truck and its a month of time off, unpaid ofcourse, that he is supposed to take to heal. Also if the last bus trips took 6 hours for what could have been 2, i can only imagine how long it would be to get to georgia. So we are stuck trying to get him home ourselves, we are not even close to being in the spot to afford transportation. Living pay check to pay check quite literally.

Is there nothing we can do?

Where is your husband now? Where is his truck?

Don’t you have a vehicle that you can use to pick him up?

In Ohio still, we have no working vehicle, he is getting a moving truck and coming home to drop it off at another place near us and family can get him from there. Still have to pay a flat rate tho because its a one way. If I had a vehicle I would have definitely made that ride for him.

This is really not a worker’s compensation issue even though your husband became ill while working. Worker’s compensation covers employees with work-related injuries or illnesses. The costs involved in retrieving your husband and his possessions fall on him, unfortunately.

I understand how scary this has been for you. I hope your husband has a full and speedy recovery.

Is your husband an employee or a contractor? Either way, he is not going to be able to get anything from the company in the way of help. Unfortunately a non job related illness or health crisis is simply not the problem of the employer. Does he have health insurance through the company? A trip by ambulance to the ER and a surgery and stay in the hospital is going to create a considerable amount of cost.
