I have a continual problem with my mother in law. About 6 months ago my wife and I were having financial problems and we were looking to return some items we had purchase and when we ran out of items to return I decided to look for a place to pawn my 10K gold Graduation Ring. The pawn shops would only give me $30 plus the interest, so I decided not to pawn it. Instead my wife told her mom to give us $30 in exchange for the ring and when we had enough money we would give her the $30 and she would give us my ring. However, months went by and we had money, but she would tell us that she had to look for it. The ring never appeared. We tried to get it back once again around the time my wife would be getting her tax refund in which my mother in law demanded half of it because she took care of one of the kids. My wife told her that she would not see any money until we got back the ring. However after much harrassment and many threats from my mother in law we never saw the ring and said that ring was lost and that it was my responsability to have gotten it back. Now, this ring's price is about $475. Would I be able to sue her for the total price of the ring + court fees?? This ring held a lot of sentimental value for me! If So, what would I need as evidence since this was a verbal contract?
