What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IM LIVE IN NJ, I HAVE A DAUGTHER WHO STARTED SCHOOL YESTERDAY AND IS IN 7TH GRADE , SHE WAS TALKING DURING LUNCH WHILE THE LUNCH AIDES WERE READING THE RULES ( MY DAUGHTER HAS LIFE THREATING FOOD ALLERGIES AND WAS TRYING TO FIND A SAFE PLACE TO SIT AND EAT) THEN THE PRINCIPAL SAW HER TAKLING TOLD HER TO COME FORWARD AND BRING HER THINGS , HER THEN MADE HER SIT FACING AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE CHILDREN AT A TABLE ALONE IN THE CORNER OF THE LUNCHROOM. THIS WAS HUMILIATING FOR HER AS WELL UPSETTING . THE PRINCIPAL I FEEL OVERREACTED AND I WAS WONDERING IF THIS VIOLATES NJ LAW FOR FEDERAL LAW REGARDING PUNISHMENT FOR STUDENTS.What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

You think that either the state or the Federal government is going to get that deeply involved in how schools manage their students, as to pass laws about how students can be disciplined?

So when you informed the principal of your daughter's life-threatening food allergies and the importance of her being able to find a safe place to eat away from such allergens...what did s/he say?

No i do not think that at all. I was only wondering how a principal can use humilation or what i call adult bullying to disipline a student. I was approached by several outraged parents to make sure he knows that this was not an acceptable was to disipline .

You gave the school virtually no notice whatsoever that your daughter may need special accommodations (the day before class starts? really?!), but are mad that she was disciplined in what is essentially a pretty harmless manner?

You did say that she was talking while aides were trying to instruct the students - what did you expect them to do?

Frankly I think you're overreacting.

If she thinks this is bad, what is she going to do for little princess when her first boss yells at her.

I tell my kids this when then tell me someone was mean to them: Whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger ~ suck it up!!!

Separating a student from their peers is not humiliation. "Adult bullying" MIGHT be if the principal called her names every day and made her sit elsewhere unprovoked (your daughter did break the school rules here) and interfered with her education. None of that happened here. Not even close.

Of course, if Princess had kept her mouth shut, maybe she would have heard if the teacher reading the rules included how to handle her situation. Given that she has such dire allergies, the principal did the most expedient thing in seating her alone (and facing away so that she couldn't continue interrupting).

Now, let's turn to YOUR part in this fiasco. Your daughter has life-threatening food allergies. Why did you not inform the school of this in ample time for them to communicate with you how they intended to handle the situation? If this were MY child, I would have contacted them mid-summer. And then again a full week or two before the start of school.

And tell Princess that, when teachers are talking? She needs to zip her lip. Period.
