Student information and HIPAA

I am a private school teacher at an adolescent treatment facility in Alabama. A flash drive containing student academic information was taken from my laptop on my desk and has not been recovered. Am I in violation of a HIPAA law?

or maybe she means FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

Did you report the drive stolen, as in police report and all?
