What is the name of your state? NY
My student loans were previously managed by a company called AFSA. I paid my unsubsidized Stafford loan plus accumulated interest in full in November of 2000. I was informed of the exact amount and told that any payment made would be applied to my unsubsidized loan before my other subsidized loans. AFSA applied the payment across the board to my subsidized and unsubsidized loans rather than the unsubsidized alone despite my intention. I was not aware of this error until another company took over my loans and gave me a list of my outstanding loans. I was surprised to see the unsubsidized loan on that list with an outstanding balance. When I inquired to the new company (Sallie Mae), they told me they cannot correct the error made by AFSA. AFSA refuses to correct the problem stating they no longer own my loans. This is costing me thousands of dollars because my loans are currently in deferment while I am completing a residency. Sallie Mae refuses to make the necessary adjustments, which are merely recalculating the subsidized loan amounts and eliminating the unsubsidized loan. I have spoken to several representatives on the phone and have written several letters with no success. Is there anything else I can do?
