What is the name of your state? New York

I have loaned a substantial amount of money to a friend and the payments are very slow and too small to ever think I am going to be repaid in full. I am owed close to $50K and have only received a small fraction of this over the last 2 years. I want to prepare for legal action should I need to.

I have a few questions:

1) I believe that this amount is too large to go to Small Claims Court with so can you please advise whether I need a lawyer or if not, the appropriate first steps I need to make?

2) I have multiple e-mails from this individual agreeing to the amount and to pay it back. Are these binding and sufficient legal evidence?

3) Can I only go after the assets of this individual under his name or can his immediate family be liable as well?

4) How long do these processes usually take?

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Best regards,
LaQua
