I live in North Carolina and was served with a summons, the way they did it was to leave the paper on my door, my mother called to tell me because she was at my home that afternoon, I called the sheriff's department, they said that they could go back and leave it with my mom. This is for consumer debt. In NC they do not have to serve you personally. In NC, however, you can respond to the summons within 30 days, which is what I have done, BUT it has to be filed with the clerk of court also. You can not just send the company a letter of dispute or explaination, with out filing with the court. I am NOT an attorney or giving legal advice, just letting you know my experience. If you respond by letter do NOT forget to file the letter with the clerk of court too!!! Good Luck, we all need it!!
