I'm a small business owner in Florida. It's recently come to my attention that when I am out of my office my 3 employees stop their work and sit around and talk about how much they're paid, private discussions we've had about their performance, and personal issues about me. I plan to fire each of them, but it will take time because I have to be able to replace them first. In the meantime, I want to be able to stop the discussions and work interruption while I'm away, but I don't see how I can do it without letting them know that I've heard their discussions. I know that in Fl I can't use any recordings as evidence in court, but can I tape them without their knowledge? I also want to know what they're telling my clients behind my back. I've read the Fl statutes on this issue and they seem like they contradict each other. I just want to know if I can legally tape them so that I can confront them with the lies they've told. Otherwise, when I fire them they will go to work for my competitors and keep spreading lies about me and my business.
