if you record a conversation between yourself and another person with the other person not knowing,then later reveal that conversation to family members, is that illegal?

New Jersey's wiretapping law is a "one-party consent" law. New Jersey makes it a crime to intercept or record an in-person or telephone conversation unless one party to the conversation consents. N.J. Stat. §§ 2A:156A-3, -4.

Recording the call may have been legal, but that doesn't mean that what is done with the recording is lawful.

If you intend to record a phone conversation, you should make sure that the person you are recording is also in New Jersey, if you want to take advantage of the one-party consent law. Many states require that all parties to a conversation consent to a recording. Even if you are in a one-party consent state, if the person you are recording is not, you have violated the law.

The reason you have for disclosing the conversation to others is important. If your purpose is not an honorable one, this could lead to legal issues for you. So facts matter.
