What is the name of your state? Az

Hi,

I am self employed and I want to study up on all the tax laws I can. Can anyone recommend good books for me to read and/or courses for me to take? I own my own personal training business as well as do real estate investing on the side. I would like to know all laws specifically pertaining to these areas, but general tax law is needed first to get a firm basis on taxes. Thank you very much.

Tax law is complex. Its not something that can be learned quickly. If you really want to learn I would recommend taking a college course on individual tax. Another option however would be to purchase a college textbook on individual tax.

You could also order a Publication 17 from the IRS and read that. However a college textbook would probably be an easier and more instructional read.

If you want the broad concepts of tax law, take tax at a law school or business school. If you want the nitty gritty of tax preparation, take the H&R Block basic course. Many colleges give full credit for the HRB course. Also, lots of accounting firms send their new accountants to the HRB course in an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical tax laws & actual tax preparation. Call around & see if any offices are offering an intensive 5-days a week course.

I understand that tax law is complex. I have been back and forth from the city library many many times. Each time I come out with a stack of books on taxes, and though I am learning some good and interesting stuff, I don't feel as though I'm finding out what I really want to know. Most of my questions focus around write off's, and real estate taxes ie: property tax, seller tax, transfer of titles/deeds, estate tax. Could you recommend any specific books/audio tapes/cd's or courses that focus on more specilized stuff?

Tax touches just about everything in life--and death. We have scores of books at the office and each specialize in a slightly different area. We also have substantial computer resources. You have still not described what you are interested in.

Look to the tax code. Scan it. If you find something interesting, look to the regulations on that code section. If you are confused, look on the internet.

A general tax law primer on tax can be found at:
