I've had concerns with my son's kindergarten teacher all year. My biggest concern was that my son was bored in her class. He knew how to write his name, count, add, and read some words before beginning school in August. The teacher never sent work home that the students did in class nor did she give homework. I often had my son do work at home and I sent it to school to show his teacher the type of work that he was capable of doing. In January, I got a newsletter stating that the students would be learning to write their first and last names, writing numbers 1-20, and adding sums up to 10. I was distraught. I went into the class and the assistant was teaching a lesson on subtraction that was very confusing to me and I teach middle school math. She drew 4 circles and then 2 circles. The problem was 4-2. Anyway, I met with the teacher and principal and told them that my son was not being challenged. The teacher said that he wasn't going to the challenging centers. He should not have a choice. Well today, I found out from a friend that the teacher is not certified in early childhood and should not have been teaching kindergarten. She is certified to teach grades 1-6. A new teacher will be in there with her for the remainder of the year. The school has not notified the parents. I feel that my son has been cheated from a quality education this year. His teacher did not relate well to kindergarten students and now I see why.

Is this a public or private school?
If it's a public school, is the teacher a long term substitute? Certification is not required in that case.

Teacher Not Certified in Early Childhood

This is a public school and the teacher is not a long-term substitute. Her certification is elementary education not early childhood.

I'm sorry, but I don't see a question in your post.
Oh, and if you have 4 circles and then you take two of them away, you will have two left over :D

I've personally never seen KINDERGARTEN homework. But whatever.
Then why not put WonderBoy in 1st grade and skip K?

The horror! I can see your distress!

See Zig's explanation of how 4 minus 2 equals 2.

And, honey, I just stopped believing you -- you don't teach math anywhere, and you never did. IF you did, you'd know EXACTLY what to do, where to go, and what the requirements are.

So I guess the rest is for me to have amusement....

Oooh! Your friend knows the teacher's CV, huh? Wow! Let's have a drink and talk about it! Is your friend working in personnel at that school, and that's how she knows??

Do explain, in extreme detail, how it is that a college-educated person, certified to teach grades 1-6, is UTTERLY UNQUALIFIED to teach Kindergartners. This is something I truly MUST KNOW!! I await your answer with the utmost of impatience!!!

Eh. A decent parent can teach their kid kindy-garden stuff, can't she? Especially if she is a Genius and Knows Best??

The teacher drew four circle 0 0 0 0 then she drew two more O O then she told the students to take two away. We all know that the answser was two but it confused many of the kids because 4 were left on the board once the teacher crossed out 2 of them. The teacher had a total of 6 circles on the board from the beginning. None of you got it!

I am certified in elementary education and can only teach grades 1-6. That's his teacher's certification as well. My friend found out from the new certified teacher that will be in the class for the remainder of the year that my son's teacher was not certified to teach Kindergarten. When I spoke to the principal in December, she had concerns about the progress of students in that class as well. Other kindergarten teachers at the same school had their students writing sentences and were sending home the work that the students did in class as well as homework.

The more I stay in education, the more I see that it is really not about the kids. This is my child and I want what's best for him.
