What is the name of your state?OH
My son will be turning 15 this February and has been trying to get a job. Most of them require him being 15, and I am new to all of this. Will he file taxes on his own the following year or will I attach it to mine? I wasn't sure because of him being under 18. Also, will he still be a dependant? He will only be able to work minimal hours, and will still be a full time student. I just want to make sure I know what to do beforehand so I don't mess it up for any of us. Thank you.

**A: as long as he is living with you and under the age of majority, he will be deemed a dependent for tax and other purposes.

But I believe he will still have to file a 1040 of his own if he makes over the minimum income level. It used to be $3,000 but I'm not sure what it is now. Even if he doesn't make enough to have to file, he will have to file to get a refund of any withheld income tax.

No problem, HG. I used to be the corporate Payroll Manager for a nationwide food/entertainment concern (think pizza, arcade games, and singing mice) so we used to get this question all the time from our 15, 16, 17-year old employees. Remind me NEVER to manage payroll in the hospitality industry again. :(
