Tenant changed locks

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Wisconsin.

My tenant changed the locks on my house without my permission and also did not give me a key.

He was served a 5 day notice to pay or leave via posting on the door. He has verbally told me he has no intention to pay or leave by the deadline, so I am filing for eviction tomorrow.

Yes, I know I have a legal right to change the locks. Must I give the XXXX a key again after I change the locks considering he is the one that is causin me to have to change the locks?

Yes, of course. Otherwise you're performing an illegal lockout which will cost you tons more in the long run.

OP used a bit of foul language. Admin removed the language but I guess the post didn't show up.

In a nutshell, the tenant changed the locks and won't give the OP a key. OP gave 5-day notice and will proceed with an eviction. In the meantime, the OP wanted to know if he could have a locksmith change the locks and then not give the tenant a copy of the new key.

Sorry, no. In any case, the OP was simply mad and didn't want to give the tenant a key as a way of getting back at him for the cost and inconvenience.

Oh. Well based on your post...Then No. OP (other OP not you Zig) should not do that. Bad form, bad business and a bad decision. The other OP should hire someone to handle his apartment's so s/he does not cost him/herself more money than needed.

I would be interested as to why the tenant changed the locks. Did the tenant do it out of ignorance not realizing that he/she was required to give the landlord a key, or did the tenant do it because the landlord was entering without proper notice.
