In my absence landlord wishes to show my apartment to
potential new renter.

Must I allow him in my apartment when I am not present?

NO you have a right to demand he show it while you are there...

Write a letter today saying the the landlord will be responsible for any and all damages and losses should he show the apartment when you are not there, just in case he fogets to lock the door behind him.

that should get his attention....

I hope you have renters insurance.
