What is the name of your state? Minnesota...
I purchased a duplex with half rented to someone whose rent was two months past due. On the first of June, it was three months past due. He was officially given notice of eviction by the former owners, and promised to pay a weekly amount to me. On the 16th, he failed to pay. On the 17th, he said he was late getting a title loan on his car, but would call me as soon as he had done so to pay some rent. On the 18th, he said he would get the car loan on the 19th and I would get the money then.

My question is, can I move him out while he is away, and turn him and his possessions over to a storage facility, leaving contact information taped to his door which will have new locks on it?

No, but you can go through the legal eviction process for your state.

This rent is owed to the previous owners, correct? (ie you did not own the property yet?) They should sue him and get a judgement for this. This is not your problem, unless they explicitly transfered the right to this money to you.

What do you mean official notice of eviction? Only a COURT issues an eviction.

Only if you like being sued for a boat load of money, having the guy still be there, and making it super complicated to evict the guy.

Consult a lawyer, and begin the FORMAL (in court) eviction process. Dot every T and cross every I.

If this tenant owes you money, first question because some will pull this stunt. DID the tenant get proper written notice of new ownership for that property ? If answer is yes then by all means follow Mn statutes >>http://www.ag.state.mn.us/consumer/housing/lt/default.htm < see item 24, 22 AND finally If your property is in Mpls or ST Paul go downtown to the govt centers to file for eviction, If your property is in suburban Ramsey or Suburban Hennipen then to one of the regional govt centers, the other countys at the court house itself . You need to make sure you get the filing done right in our state it will bite you back if you dont get it right and youll have to do it over again. IF you have never taken a tenant to court before BY all means use the links up top and go get assistance from a atty to make sure you get it right as far as all the paper work done. with proper paperwork and following the law this should go fine and in this state future LLs will see the UD records and that will be enough to limit the tenants ability to rent anything that isnt a craphole or doghouse.
