I'm a landlord from Massachusetts who has three female tenants legally living in one apartment having issues with one of their boyfriends, who happens to be more than "just visiting..."
I have been told by both Female Tenants A & B that Tenant C's boyfriend is not only unwelcome in the place, but has also been freeloading (ex: eating other roommates' food without permission, using the shower, to name just two) for the last few months and being rude and nasty to boot. I didn't even know about this guy until the other day when they complained to me about it! At the time of this post, C is currently away for two months in Europe and she gave her apartment keys to this guy (!!!)... and he's been leeching off the other two women while his girl is away. A & B requested for me to change the locks on the front door to prevent him from coming in, sending him the message that he doesn't live there, and give both ladies peace of mind. After listening to their story, I complied with their request and changed the lock and gave A & B new keys. C will DEFINITELY get her new key when she comes back from her long overseas trip (I will directly hand it to her, not her boyfriend).
Did I do the right thing to change the locks on request? To me, it doesn't seem right for him to be in the apartment on his own - unless his girlfriend who IS the legal tenant is present with him... especially with her roommates there who clearly don't approve of him. I thought she doesn't have the right to hand him the keys to begin with.
A sidenote here is that A & B both lived in the apartment the longest (over two years) while C joined them about 10 months ago, so they get seniority over her in terms of decisions in the apartment if that even matters. Personally I cannot blame the two ladies in this regard.
Any thoughts and/or comments?
