What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

I am a tenant that entered into a rent to own contract and a lease. I was unable to proceed with the rent to own contract so I terminated the lease after the term had expired. I left a deposit and was told that I cannot retrieve it as it is non-refundable. Is there any way I can obtain the deposit as I did complete my lease but due to financial difficulties I could not proceed and continue with the rent to own contract.

Thank you.

Chances are, since it was originally intended as a rent to own contract, your deposit was probably considered as "earnest money" intended as a down payment towards a purchase that now is not going to happen. In such circumstances, the contract usually specifies this, and in the majority of cases, the "earnest money" is most always non-refundable.

The only way to know for sure is to read over your rent to own contract is see exactly what it says about this money and how it is to be used.
